CYCLONE FENGAL: NOV. 30, 2024
On November 30, 2024, Cyclone Fengal made landfall in Tamil Nadu. The Villupuram District, where CR’s schools are located, experienced the most rainfall in 30 years, with over 13 inches falling in 24 hours. Schools and shops were closed for weeks and student houses and schools suffered serious damage. Thanks to the help of our generous donors, relief efforts included the following:
3076 5 kg bags of rice distributed to students
1 month supply of food for 8 gypsy families including rice, oil, vegetables, fruits, spices
590 blankets for hostel students
110 blankets for the homeless
1 month supply of food, backpacks, blankets, sleeping mats for 42 students whose
homes were severely damaged in the storm
Structural repairs to 15 schools (all schools were required to contribute to the repair costs)
Construction of 1 room (18’x13’) homes for 6 students whose homes were destroyed by the storm
All construction wascompleted by June 2025. When heavy rains took place in the fall of 2025, none of the repaired schools or newly constructed houses suffered any damage.
Typical new post-Fengal home for CR student and family.
